Master project - Superconducting resonators on sapphire

We are currently looking for a student to do a master thesis project on the development of epitaxial Nb on Sapphire for superconducting microwave resonators. The project is a new collaboration between the Advanced Semiconductor Quantum Materials group and the Hybrid Quantum Systems group and we are looking for an enthusiastic student to kickstart it. The main objective of the project will be to investigate how material properties of the Niobium relate to the performance of the superconducting quantum circuit measured by the Q factor. A driving force behind this kind of research is the promise of exploiting such superconducting circuits for quantum computing applications. During the course of the project you would perform experimental work such as low temperature transport measurements as well as form a theoretical understanding on how Nb film properties affect circuit performance.
